The producers of Federación Abades in the department of Nariño grow and process coffees that contribute to our Colombia Huayku offering. Huayku is a staple coffee for Stumptown, not just for our single origin menu, but also a vital component in some of our blends. Federación Abades formed in 2017, after six-years of working through the Catholic Relief Services Borderland Project. Stumptown’s relationship with Federación Abades. When Stumptown asked the Abades what they would like to call this coffee going forward, and they suggested Huayku - a Quechua word that refers to a valley that is formed when mountains move.

Nariño is the southernmost department in Colombia at a convergence of the three mountain ranges which define the country’s most renowned coffee growing regions. It is an incredible coffee landscape, with ideal growing conditions and impressive elevations between 1,850 and 2,000 meters above sea level. Abades represents over 200 smallholder producers, each of them producing coffee on less than one hectare of land.

Federación Abades formed in 2017, after six-years of working through the Catholic Relief Services Borderland Project. Stumptown has been purchasing coffee from this community of producers since 2013. Located just outside the town of Samaniego, teams of multi-generational producers contribute cherry and build these Huayku lots in the quality control lab of the federación’s warehouse constructed in 2023.

Stumptown is proud to work with this community of producers and celebrate the incredible coffees of the Nariño region.
